The Ghanaian government has announced plans to deliver new housing units for members of the country’s security services, as part of efforts to improve welfare and recognise their service to the nation.
President John Dramani Mahama revealed the initiative during an end-of-year event of the Ghana Police Service, known as the West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA), held at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The housing programme will be implemented in partnership with a Singapore-based company, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during President Mahama’s official visit to Singapore in 2025.
The agreement provides for the establishment of a prefabricated housing manufacturing facility in Ghana to support large-scale infrastructure development. The project forms part of the government’s ‘Big Push Agenda’ and is expected to significantly improve accommodation for personnel across the security sector, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
President Mahama noted that the company’s first major assignment in Ghana was the construction of a 10,000-bed hostel at the University of Ghana, and that its mandate has now been expanded to include housing for security agencies.
He has directed the Police Service to identify suitable land within existing barracks to facilitate the rapid rollout of the housing projects.
During the event, the President also commended the police for maintaining public safety during the Christmas and New Year period, citing low crime levels despite heightened travel and social activities.
He attributed the outcome to effective planning, discipline and intelligence-led operations, and praised the strategic deployment of officers across highways, communities, markets, places of worship, transport hubs and entertainment venues, noting that the visible police presence helped reassure the public.
