The Togolese government has extradited former Burkinabe transitional president, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, to Burkina Faso over his alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The extradition was officially announced by Togo’s Minister of Justice and Human Rights, also known as the Keeper of the Seals.
According to the statement, the decision followed a formal request submitted on January 12, 2026, by Burkinabe judicial authorities. The request came just days after authorities in Ouagadougou revealed they had foiled an alleged plot aimed at destabilizing the current government.
Damiba, who ruled Burkina Faso from January to September 2022 before being overthrown by Captain Traoré, is facing multiple charges. These include misappropriation of public funds, illicit enrichment, corruption, incitement to commit crimes, aggravated receipt of stolen goods, and money laundering.
The former head of state had been living in Togo as a refugee since his removal from power. Burkinabe prosecutors have identified him as the principal architect of the alleged plot, accusing him of designing and coordinating actions, mobilizing financial resources, and recruiting both civilian and military actors.
Burkina Faso authorities say investigations are ongoing as Damiba is expected to face trial upon his return to the country.
