Several communities and Islamic learning centres across the Gambia have received humanitarian assistance, with donations aimed at improving welfare and supporting education in underserved areas.
The support included food supplies, bedding, water infrastructure, and learning materials distributed to households, Quranic recitation centres, and individuals in multiple regions of the country, according to organisers of the outreach.
The initiative, coordinated by the Welfare Trust Foundation and led by President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lamin Gibba, focused on communities in the West Coast, Lower River, Central River, and Upper River regions. Beneficiaries included orphans, people with disabilities, and families facing economic hardship.
Speaking on the outreach, Mr. Gibba, said the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to ease hardship and support vulnerable populations. He noted that the foundation, established in 2021 and based in Brikama, has continued to focus on humanitarian assistance and community support across the country.
In January, a borehole was installed in Bugeling village in the Foni area to improve access to clean water. A Quranic recitation centre in Babylon, West Coast Region, which accommodates about 160 students including 30 orphans, received livestock, mattresses, bags of rice, and cooking oil. Similar assistance was extended to communities in Basori village in Kombo East and Daihairu in Brikama.
At the Galenmander Quranic Recitation Centre in Bansang, Central River Region, which hosts 136 students including 11 orphans, food items, mattresses, cooking oil, and livestock were distributed. Cash assistance was also provided to orphans and persons living with disabilities in the surrounding community.
Additional donations were delivered to learning centres in Sukurukunda, Central River Region, and to disadvantaged household heads in Basse, Upper River Region. Sports equipment, including footballs, was supplied to various locations to support recreational activities for young people.
Beneficiaries welcomed the donations, saying the assistance would help improve living conditions and support learning in their communities. They also pledged to use the items for their intended purposes.
