The Sudanese Armed Forces have announced a significant military breakthrough, reopening the strategic Dilling road in South Kordofan nearly two years after the area fell under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement released by the military, the army said the road was reopened following what it described as a successful operation that led to the defeat and destruction of RSF units in the area. The army claimed the operation resulted in substantial losses in both personnel and equipment for the paramilitary group.
Military officials said operations would continue until what they described as “all militia elements are eliminated” and security is restored across the country. Eyewitnesses reported that Sudanese forces entered the besieged town of Dilling after intense clashes involving RSF-aligned forces, including the Sudanese Revolutionary Forces (SRF) and their ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). Residents were seen welcoming the army as it moved into the town, according to local accounts.
Videos shared by Sudanese soldiers on social media showed scenes of celebration involving both troops and civilians following the army’s entry into Dilling. There was no immediate response from the RSF, which had imposed a prolonged siege on the town since January 2024.
Sudan remains deeply divided by the ongoing conflict. Of the country’s 18 states, the Sudanese Revolutionary Forces control five states in the Darfur region, with parts of North Darfur still under army control.
The Sudanese army maintains control over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. The war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the region’s most severe humanitarian crises.
