The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) on Tuesday launched a two-day media training aimed at enhancing ethical reporting and adherence to the code of conduct for journalists in The Gambia.
The programme, organized in collaboration with the Gambia Press Union (GPU), forms part of the EU-funded initiative to consolidate democratic governance in the country.
Key media policy documents launched at the event include:
- Workplace Sexual Harassment Policy for the Media in The Gambia (2026)
- Cherno Charter of Ethics for Journalists and Media Operators (2025)
- Towards Effective Complaints Mechanisms (2025), which monitors ethical violations and provides guidance on responding appropriately.
President of the GPU, Isatou Keita, said the documents were developed to strengthen professionalism, ethical standards, safety, and accountability. She added that they provide practical frameworks for ethical reporting, effective self-regulation, safer workplaces, and for addressing challenges within the media environment.
For the Head of International IDEA Gambia Office, Jainaba Fye, the collaboration with GPU has been pivotal in producing tools to address the growing threats to media integrity. She emphasized that such training serves as a blueprint for a more ethical, accountable, and inclusive future.
In her remarks, the European Ambassador to the Gambia, H.E. Imma Roca I Cortes, stated that the documents respond to pressing needs within the media sector. She added that they reflect the commitment to professionalism, accountability, dignity, and integrity on the part of Gambian journalists.
She further urged for the swift implementation of the documents to guide journalistic practice in the country. The event was attended by other dignitaries who echoed the significance of the documents and commended the organizers for their approach to promoting quality journalism in The Gambia.
