The Dangote Refinery has rejected allegations that it imports petrol into Nigeria and threatened legal action against individuals it identified as being behind the claims.
In a statement issued on Monday, the refinery described the claim as “false and deliberately misleading,” adding that it would reveal the identities of those responsible at the appropriate time.
The refinery’s Chief Executive Officer, David Bird, clarified on February 4, that the facility imports blending components such as reformates and condensates, which require further processing before becoming market-ready petrol.
He noted that reports had wrongly portrayed these imports as finished fuel, a point he said was addressed during discussions at an S&P Global forum in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Bird added that the only petrol supplied to the Nigerian market is Euro 5- compliant Premium Motor Spirit, stressing that the refinery’s operations have improved fuel quality and reduced reliance on import.
The Dangote refinery is a massive, multi-billion dollar oil refinery and petrochemical complex operational in Lagos, Nigeria.
It’s the world’s largest single-train refinery, designed to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily (with expansion plans for 1.4 million BPD), aiming to make Nigeria self-sufficient in refined products like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, and become a major exporter, boosting energy independence for Africa
