Mali’s transitional government has relaunched its annual social welfare programme, distributing food kits to military personnel and vulnerable populations ahead of Ramadan and Lent.
The initiative, aimed at supporting citizens during the holy season, features a significant increase in aid compared to previous years.
The donations were presented at the Kati military camp and the Military Engineering unit in the capital, Bamako. A total of 800 food kits were distributed. Each kit contains 50 kilograms of millet, 50 kilograms of rice, 50 kilograms of sugar, and a 20-litre container of cooking oil.
Two additional donations were made by the Transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, to the Armed Forces Social Service for the benefit of war wounded, widows, and orphans of military and paramilitary personnel from the Military Engineering unit and the Kati camp.
The ceremony was chaired by the Special Adviser to the Transitional President in charge of social works, Aguibou Dembélé, in the presence of administrative, traditional, and customary authorities.
In his remarks, Dembélé said the gesture of solidarity from the Head of State aims to encourage mutual assistance among Malians and help alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable citizens.
Other dignitaries present commended the initiative, describing it as a significant humanitarian act.
The donations, which began a few days before the start of Ramadan and Lent, are expected to continue across the country.
