Italian energy firm Eni has announced the discovery of substantial hydrocarbon deposits at the Calao South field in Block, marking the country’s second-largest discovery after the 2021 Baleine find.
The Calao South discovery involves an estimated 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas and 450 million barrels of condensate, totaling roughly 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
This discovery is expected to play a key role in Côte d’Ivoire’s domestic energy needs and production capacity, contributing to the nation’s energy sovereignty.
With flagship deposits already in operation or under development, this new find positions the area among the country’s most promising energy assets.
For the Ivorian government, these additional reserves represent a long-term guarantee for electricity production and further strengthen the nation’s natural gas potential.
