The President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has reaffirmed that the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) now constitutes the central pillar of Mali’s foreign policy and diplomatic engagement.
Speaking during the traditional ceremony for the presentation of New Year wishes by the Diplomatic Corps at the Koulouba Palace, the Head of State outlined Mali’s foreign policy priorities in a global context marked by shifting alliances, geopolitical tensions and evolving multilateral systems.
Addressing ambassadors and diplomatic representatives accredited to Mali, President Goïta described the AES as a strategic instrument for strengthening regional integration and enhancing the collective influence of Sahelian states on the international stage. He emphasized that Sahelian cooperation now represents Mali’s primary framework for diplomatic projection.
According to the President, the AES is an endogenous and coordinated response to shared security and economic challenges facing the region. He noted that the alliance is designed to defend the collective interests of its member states in the areas of security, investment and development.
The Head of State also stressed Mali’s commitment to diversifying its international partnerships. He reaffirmed that Mali remains open to cooperation with all countries that respect its sovereignty, signalling a pragmatic and interest-based diplomatic approach.
President Goïta further highlighted the link between domestic reforms and foreign policy credibility. He stated that institutional consolidation, the fight against corruption and administrative modernization are essential foundations for strengthening Mali’s standing internationally.
Economic priorities, including energy sovereignty and investments capable of generating employment, were also presented as key pillars of Mali’s external engagement strategy.
On the security front, the President underscored the progress made by national defence and security forces in combating asymmetric threats, noting that the gradual restoration of territorial control remains critical to stability and investor confidence.
On behalf of the Diplomatic Corps, its Dean, Igor Anatolievitch Gromyko, Ambassador of the Russian Federation, welcomed Mali’s efforts and reiterated the importance of continued diplomatic engagement.
