The Commissioner General of Prisons has announced the death of three people following a shooting incident at Kiboga Prison on Monday, February 23, 2026.
According to a press release issued after the incident, the deceased have been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, who was serving as Deputy Officer in Charge, Principal Officer I Akishuri Bright, described as third in command, and Ms Ayebare Sarah, spouse of the Officer in Charge.
The incident occurred at about 6:30am on Monday when a prison warder, Anguyo Moses, allegedly opened fire on his supervisors, fatally shooting them. Following the incident, the suspect fled the facility.
Police were immediately called to secure the scene, and joint security operations have since been launched to pursue the suspect. Authorities confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting has been recovered. However, the suspect remains at large and is considered dangerous.
The Uganda Prisons Service has urged anyone with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to report to the police.
Officials said the public will be updated on any new developments as investigations continue.
The tragedy at Kiboha mirrors a chilling 2017 incident that left Masindi town in disbelief after Major Tinkamarire, a senior army officer, was shot dead by a prison warder while dressed in civilian clothes.
