Liberia is participating in the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), currently underway at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, as part of global efforts to advance gender equality and empower women and girls.
The chairperson of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia, Ellen A. Attoh-Wreh, is attending the meeting alongside Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gbeme Horace‑Kollie, and Deputy Minister for Gender, Laura Golakeh, representing the country at the international gathering.
CSW70 has brought together global leaders, policymakers, civil society organisations and gender advocates to review progress and accelerate action toward achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide.
During the high-level engagements, Attoh-Wreh stressed the importance of strong legislative backing for gender-responsive policies in Liberia.
“The advancement of women and girls must remain a national priority. As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to strengthen legislation that promotes women’s participation in governance, economic empowerment and protection from gender-based violence,” she said.
Gender Minister Horace-Kollie reaffirmed the government’s commitment to international frameworks that promote gender equality while highlighting ongoing national initiatives.
Deputy Minister Golakeh also took part in several bilateral meetings and side events aimed at strengthening partnerships with development partners and international stakeholders. According to her, collaboration with global partners is essential in accelerating Liberia’s gender equality agenda and ensuring sustainable programmes that benefit women and girls.
Liberia’s participation at CSW70 underscores the country’s continued engagement with international partners to address challenges affecting women and girls while promoting inclusive national development.
Historically, Liberia has benefited from participation in global gender programmes that have expanded international cooperation, technical assistance and funding opportunities for initiatives supporting women’s leadership, education, health and economic empowerment.
The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women remains the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and empowering women. Its annual sessions bring together representatives from UN member states to review progress and set priorities for future action.
