President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia on Monday departed for Conakry, Guinea, where he is expected to attend a high-level regional meeting aimed at addressing rising tensions along the Liberia-Guinea border in Lofa County.
The meeting will bring together President Boakai, Guinea’s transitional leader Mamadi Doumbouya, and Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio as regional leaders seek to de-escalate the situation and promote peaceful border management within the Mano River Union.
The talks come amid reports of growing tensions in the Sorlumba area of Foya District, where residents and local authorities have raised concerns over alleged encounters between Guinean soldiers and Liberian civilians near a disputed section of the border.
Sources in the region say tensions escalated after Guinean troops reportedly crossed into territory claimed by Liberia, raising concerns among residents and local officials in border communities.
Diplomatic sources say the Conakry meeting is expected to provide a platform for the leaders to address the situation and strengthen diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.
Côte d’Ivoire’s President Alassane Ouattara is also expected to participate in the discussions, highlighting broader regional concerns about maintaining peace and stability within the Mano River Union.
President Boakai is accompanied by a high-level Liberian delegation including Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of State without Portfolio Mamaka Bility, National Security Advisor Samuel Kofi Woods II, Local Government Minister Francis Nyumalin, National Defense Minister Geraldine Janet George, and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia Davidson F. Forleh.
The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening dialogue and reinforcing mechanisms for peaceful border management among countries in the Mano River Union.
The Liberian leader departed the country via Roberts International Airport in Margibi County.
