The European Union has pledged continued support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, describing the country as a regional anchor for security and stability.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas made the remarks on Monday during a joint press conference with Nigerian officials, saying the bloc stands “shoulder to shoulder” with Nigeria in confronting extremist threats.
“Extremist groups like Boko Haram pose not only a threat to Nigeria, but also to the region,” she said.
Kallas highlighted the EU’s support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in promoting regional stability, including efforts to strengthen the bloc’s standby force.
She described Nigeria as a “political heavyweight” and a regional anchor, highlighting its importance for stability across sub-Saharan Africa.
“As Africa’s most populous nation and economic engine, Nigeria’s stability is vital for the entire region,” Kallas added.
She also noted that West Africa faces growing security challenges, including coups, cross-border terrorism in the Sahel, and humanitarian crises across the region.
Kallas said cooperation between the EU and Nigeria has expanded steadily in areas such as trade, investment, and green and digital initiatives. She also pointed to progress on the EU-Nigeria Readmission Agreement on migration.
