The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) have confirmed a train derailment on the Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor that left several passengers injured.
In an official statement, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said emergency protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams promptly deployed to the scene.
The official explained that the train departed Rigasa in Kaduna at 7:15 a.m. and was approaching Asham station around 9:16 a.m. when a loud bang was heard after the rear locomotive collided with the adjoining passenger coach.
Although no fatalities were recorded, passengers sustained both serious and minor injuries and were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was likely caused by a fault in one or more couplers, though inquiries are ongoing.
Confirming the incident, the NSIB stated that it has launched a full investigation, focusing on technical, operational, and infrastructure-related factors, including locomotive attachment systems and train configuration.
