ADDIS ABABA – The African Union has commended the governments of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone for opting for peaceful and diplomatic engagement in addressing ongoing border tensions, describing the move as a significant step toward sustaining regional stability.
In a statement issued following a high-level Tripartite Summit held on March 16, 2026, in Conakry, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf Ali, welcomed the outcome of the meeting and praised the three West African nations for choosing dialogue over confrontation.
The summit, convened by the Heads of State of the three countries, focused on strengthening border cooperation and promoting stability within the framework of the Mano River Union.
“The Chairperson highly commends the Governments of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone for the collective decision to choose the path of dialogue and pursue a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to ongoing border tensions,” the AU statement noted.
According to the Commission, the decision is in line with key continental frameworks, including the African Union Constitutive Act and the AU Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact, which promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Member States.
The AU further lauded what it described as a strong demonstration of cooperation, good neighborliness, and commitment to regional peace by the three countries. It emphasized that the development reflects the effectiveness of African-led solutions in resolving African challenges.
The Chairperson also acknowledged the role played by the Economic Community of West African States and other international partners in supporting the dialogue process that led to the outcome.
The AU noted that the agreement reached by the three countries could serve as a model for conflict prevention and resolution across the continent, particularly in regions facing similar cross-border challenges.
Meanwhile, the Commission welcomed plans by the three governments to convene a Summit of the Mano River Union within a month. The meeting is expected to focus on revitalizing the regional body and strengthening cooperation in areas of peace, security, and development.
