Lawmakers in The Gambia on Wednesday received a comprehensive report detailing progress on major electricity initiatives, including the Gambia Energy Access Project (GEAP), the Gambia Electricity Restoration and Modernization Project (GERMP), and the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Access Project (ECOREAP).
The report, presented by Mam Kumba Touray, Financial Management Specialist at the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), totaled over US$54 million (approximately D3.888 billion Dalasi).
The parliamentās Committee on Public Enterprises reviewed the report covering the period from January 1 to December 31, 2023.
Regarding GEAP, Touray said total receipts stood at US$4,682,843, while total expenditure amounted to US$4,543,236 for the period under review.
Presenting the report on GERMP, she added that total receipts stood at US$41,314,060, while total expenditure totaled US$41,556,362, resulting in a deficit of US$242,302 for the same period.
Regarding ECOREAP, she said that total receipts amounted to US$9,678,461, while expenditures totaled US$9,527,678, resulting in a surplus of US$150,703.
Speaking on the benefits of the initiatives, Project Coordinator Haddy Njie emphasized that GEAP aims to improve access to electricity and enhance household energy security, supporting sustainable economic development in The Gambia.
She added that GERMP aims to support the implementation of priority investments to restore electricity services in targeted municipal and regional areas and complement fiscal stabilization efforts.
Regarding ECOREAP, she explained that Phase 1 aims to increase access to reliable electricity. She added that the project has been conceptualized as a series of projects (SOP), with the overall program targeting 2.5 million people across five countries: Guinea-Bissau, Niger, Mali, Togo, and The Gambia.
The consideration of the reports on the three electricity projects is scheduled for February 23, 2026.
The projects are government-led initiatives funded in partnership with the World Bank and ECOWAS as part of a coordinated effort to address power instability and environmental degradation.
