A Turkish medical team has carried out a second series of successful kidney transplant surgeries in Burkina Faso, marking further progress toward establishing a sustainable transplant programme in the country.
The operations were performed at CHU-Tengandogo University Hospital in the capital, Ouagadougou, as part of a project led by the Turkish Organ Transplant Foundation, with support from Türkiye’s Ministry of Health and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).
Burkinabé surgeon Boureima Ouédraogo, who worked alongside the Turkish team, said the initiative aims to enable local doctors to perform transplant surgeries independently. He noted that the partnership has produced positive results following the country’s first successful kidney transplants, which were conducted last year with Turkish support.
Burkina Faso’s first kidney transplant was carried out in 2025 by the Turkish medical team. This year’s procedures included a transplant between siblings.
Organisers said the broader objective of the programme is to help build a self-sustaining transplant service in Burkina Faso through specialised training, technical support, and institutional capacity building, while also addressing immediate medical needs.
The partnership focuses on strengthening local medical expertise, improving health infrastructure, enhancing collaboration between Turkish and Burkinabé health professionals, and expanding access to specialised surgical care.
