President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a new national initiative that places family units at the center of Nigeria’s social and economic development agenda.
Declaring 2026 as the “Year of Families and Social Development,” the president said the move is aimed at tackling deep-rooted challenges such as poverty, insecurity, and social instability by strengthening family structures across the country.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
According to the statement, the initiative will focus on strengthening household incomes, providing parenting and family support programmes, and expanding access to decent and affordable housing.
“Societies that invest in family stability reduce vulnerability and long-term instability,” the statement said.
The development follows President Tinubu’s recent visit to Türkiye, where nine bilateral agreements were signed, including a memorandum of understanding between Nigeria’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Services.
The agreement is expected to guide reforms in key areas such as social services, child protection, and community-based support systems in Nigeria.
The initiative mirrors a similar family-focused policy approach adopted by Türkiye, reflecting a broader emphasis on the family as a cornerstone of social cohesion and economic development.
In 2025, Türkiye launched its own “Year of the Family” initiative, aimed at adopting and implementing national policies designed to prioritize and strengthen the family institution.
