Gambia’s Deputy Speaker, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, has called for increased participation in parliamentary proceedings, active engagement in legislative duties, and greater focus on addressing key national issues.
The lawmaker made the call on Monday while delivering his opening statement at the official opening of the First Ordinary Session of the 2026 Legislative Year.
He urged lawmakers to put aside political differences and collaborate to enhance the effectiveness of their legislative roles and responsibilities, while prioritizing the interests of the public.
Acknowledging the significance of the holy month of Ramadan, Hon. Njie encouraged unity, reflection, and dedication during the period.
He further implored members to reflect on their roles in serving the people and how upholding the virtues of Ramadan, such as compassion, self-discipline, solidarity, and charity, aligns with the work of the Assembly.
He described the session as one that holds the promise of progress, reflection, and constructive debate.
“I urge members of this legislature to demonstrate greater commitment and dedication in the new legislative year,” he said.
While thanking the entire staff and management of the legislature, he reiterated the need for members to once again take note of the relevant provisions of the Constitution and the Standing Orders of the National Assembly during the ordinary session.
