A lawmaker in The Gambia has called for expanded opportunities for women and girls in education, politics and the workplace, stressing that gender equality is essential for sustainable development.
Suwaibou Touray, the National Assembly Member for Wuli East and Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), made the remarks while marking the 2026 observance of International Women’s Day.
Touray said the country should continue to promote policies that improve access to education for girls, increase women’s participation in elections, strengthen workplace protections and uphold women’s rights to make personal decisions about their lives.
“No society can develop and sustain progress without the equal participation of men and women,” he said, adding that societies that promote women’s involvement in decision-making create conditions for sustainable economic growth, peace and security.
Touray also highlighted the historical significance of International Women’s Day, noting that the observance was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1977 to promote awareness and action on issues affecting women’s rights.
According to him, the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” underscores the need for governments, institutions and individuals to take deliberate action to advance gender equality.
He reiterated that empowering women to participate fully in national life strengthens democratic governance and supports long-term development.
