Police in Uganda have arrested five suspects believed to be behind a series of motorcycle robberies in areas south of the capital Kampala, authorities said.
The arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation targeting thefts reported between June 2025 and March 6, 2026 in the Lubowa and Ndejje areas. The robberies mainly targeted motorcycles used for transport services.
Speaking at the Uganda Police Force headquarters on Monday, police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said investigators linked the suspects to a string of attacks on motorcycle riders.
The suspects were identified as Kamoga Sharif, also known as Mugisha, 20; Byagaba Liberty, 20; Ssempungu Patrick, also known as Junior, 23; Ssegawa Stuart, 19; and Ssenyonga Denis, 25.
Kawala said the operation began with the arrest of Kamoga Sharif in Kyengera Town Council on February 5, 2026, which led investigators to the other suspects.
“So far, five suspects have been arrested and one motorcycle, registration number UMA 663HM, has been recovered as an exhibit,” she said.
Police allege the group stole motorcycles before dismantling them and selling the parts through informal networks.
Authorities say at least 14 victims have been identified so far, while investigations continue to track down additional suspects and individuals suspected of facilitating the thefts.
Motorcycle taxis, commonly known as boda bodas, are a major source of transport and employment across East Africa. According to estimates, more than 1.5 million riders operate in Uganda, with large numbers also working in neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania.
Police have urged riders and motorcycle owners to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity as efforts to dismantle the criminal network continue.
