Madagascar’s Transitional President, Michael Randrianirina, on Monday dismissed Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo along with the entire government, in a surprising move from the presidency.
A statement issued by Harry Laurent Rahajason, communications director of the presidency in Antananarivo, said a new prime minister will be appointed soon in accordance with constitutional procedures. The statement did not provide a reason for the dismissal of the previous government officials.
President Randrianirina assumed control of the Indian Ocean island nation following widespread protests that forced out his predecessor, Andry Rajoelina, who fled the country last October.
At the end of February, Randrianirina indicated that elections under the “Re-foundation of the Republic of Madagascar” framework are scheduled for 2027.
