MONROVIA – The Governments of Liberia and Barbados have signed landmark visa waiver and political consultation agreements, signaling a major step toward strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia, marks a renewed commitment by both countries to deepen cooperation and expand opportunities for their citizens.
Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, described the agreements as transformative, noting that they will ease travel restrictions, enhance bilateral engagement, and promote stronger people-to-people connections.
“This agreement represents a new era in Liberia’s relationship with Barbados. It will make travel easier for our citizens, strengthen institutional cooperation, and open doors for meaningful cultural and economic exchange,” Nyanti said.
She also disclosed ongoing discussions aimed at creating opportunities for Liberian nurses and health workers to seek employment in Barbados.
“We are working toward a framework that will allow our skilled professionals, particularly in the health sector, to access opportunities abroad while contributing to national development,” she added.
For her part, Barbados’ High Commissioner to Liberia, Juliette Bynoe Sutherland, welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone in advancing cooperation and mutual development between the two countries.
“This is more than a diplomatic agreement; it is a bridge between our peoples. It reflects our shared commitment to collaboration, growth, and a future built on mutual respect and opportunity,” Sutherland said.
The visa waiver agreement is expected to facilitate easier movement between Liberia and Barbados, while the political consultation framework will guide structured and regular diplomatic engagement on issues of mutual interest, including trade, investment, education, and healthcare.
The agreements underscore a broader effort by both nations to translate historical ties into tangible benefits for their people, while opening new pathways for collaboration across sectors.
