Ethiopia has opened discussions with Britain aimed at deepening diplomatic engagement on bilateral and regional relations.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos on Sunday received British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, marking the latest in a series of visits by senior foreign officials to Ethiopia in recent weeks.
In a statement, Prime Minister Abiy said discussions with Cooper focused on bilateral and regional issues, including enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
In a separate meeting, Cooper met with Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos to further discuss bilateral relations and regional development.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said in a statement that discussions on the strong and longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom featured prominently during the meeting between the two ministers. According to the statement, the talks underscored the importance of elevating these ties to a new level.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional peace and security issues of mutual interest.
Cooper’s visit comes amid heightened diplomatic activity in Addis Ababa, which has recently hosted the foreign ministers of China, Germany, and Japan, as well as the United States Deputy Secretary of State.
During the visit, officials from both countries signed several cooperation frameworks, including memoranda of understanding on technical cooperation in public investment and asset management under the Ethiopia Investment Advisory Facility.
