President Hakainde Hichilema on Wednesday ordered the immediate resignation of Health Minister Elijah Muchima in an unexpected Cabinet reshuffle.
The Zambian head of state also dismissed the Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Elias Mubanga, citing Article 116 (3) (a) of the Constitution of Zambia as the legal basis for the move.
No reasons were provided for the abrupt dismissals. However, the President thanked both ministers for their service to the nation.
“The President has conveyed his appreciation to Honourable Muchima and Honourable Mubanga for their service to the Government of the Republic of Zambia and extends his best wishes for their future endeavours,” State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said in a statement.
Muchima was appointed Minister of Health in July 2024 during a previous Cabinet reshuffle by President Hichilema, replacing Sylvia Masebo as part of a broader government reorganisation.
The presidency said successors would be announced in due course.
